It was bound to happen. It looks like under new CEO Larry Page’s reign, it will be all about money. For a traditionally open and free spirited company, this a 180 degree turn around. There’s no denying now that the free ride from Google is over.

The announcement of new higher pricing for the Google App Engine has cause many developers of useful utilities to pull their apps. Many just shut down, others are looking into other hosting options. No doubt, now that Google has given developers a reason not to trust them, many will think twice before using other the company’s free services.

Today, Google announced it’s putting the axe to quite a few services to concentrate more on monetization and focus on a few main projects. Of course, the old “we’re gonna cannibalize the old stuff, and put it into our new stuff” is the mantra of this round of axe swinging. It’s smart and profitable, but this is not what made Google great. No, what made Google so great was the development of services that were just cool and good for the Internet and consumers. Now, it seems this will be a new Google, concerned about the bottom line and share holders.

I know I will miss the old Google. “Don’t be evil” will probably go by the wayside and corporate greed will kick in. It’s sad really, but I’m speculating here. Google will still continue to have great services, but I will be watching to see if they begin behaving badly. If they happen to start acting like another Oracle, Microsoft, or any number of evil companies, I will be looking for a new email host. Or, perhaps, I’ll just use my VPS mail server on one of my many domains.

Ok, I just spent a crap load of time getting this blog moved over to Amazon EC2, just for the heck of it. Sure I could use my old VPS, but this is much cooler! lol Beside that, it’s FREE for a while at least.

This blog uses next to no bandwidth anyway because no one ever comes here. :)

Right now I’m jobless, penniless, and girlfriendless. While I’m not really complaining about the girlfriend thing, it was kind of a toxic relationship after a while, the jobless and penniless parts suck.

Yeah, sure I put in for unemployment, but it’s the government and they drag their feet, taking their sweet time getting a decision. Beside that, drawing unemployment in Texas is like a full time job. They want you to make no less than 5 job contacts a week, and attend their seminars. What if, just what if I’m so broke I can’t get out of the house? What if I can’t afford bus fare to anywhere? It’s called being broke, which most politicians know nothing about. You know what’s funny about that? It’s the ones who have money and jobs that make these stupid laws. I’d like to see them follow this crap. It’s easy fo you to make rules as long as you’re no the one that has to follow them.

Too bad I’m not in California where I can sit on my ass all day and draw unemployment. lol I think I’d have started making money blogging by now.

By the way, I have nifty little podcasting domain available if anyone’s interested?

Well, tons of stuff has changed. I’ve working as a line cook the past few months in a fairly new upscale restaurant. I’ve learned so much about food and myself. I’m not sure what to do with this blog. I’m getting farther away from tech, and no telling where my interests will focus next.

I also started a new blog for food exploration and adventures. I may merge these two blogs, but no telling at this point.

Well, I’m moving to Lubbock, TX!

Of course it’s coming with a new job. :) I’ll be getting away from the greasy spoon and moving to something different! It’s a restaurant/wine bar. The food will be outstanding, and I’m really excited about it! Maybe I’ll post some pictures of the food.

In honesty, I’ve been trying to figure out how to transition this blog into a different kind of blog. I’ve been looking at themes, playing with different plugins, and just trying new stuff out; when I’ve had the time to do so.

I guess my public image has become more important to me over the last few years. Although I’ll still speak my mind, I’ve started to feel obligated to watch what I say and how I say it. It’s tough to make the change and I’m still trying to figure it out in a way. I mean, perhaps I can split the blog into various parts (subdomains) pertaining to food, gaming, technology, etc., but I really don’t want it to get that complicated. It is still an option. I really prefer things to me simple at this time.

All that being said, I really need to revamp the site and get things rolling again.

Ok, it seems like the host I’ve been using had routing issues getting to my blog. From what I was told, it was a Level3 and/or Clearwire being blocked thing, not sure which. So until they get that fixed, I’ve housed this blog on my own service. It was relatively painless to move it over. We’ll see how it goes.

Heh, someone thinks this site is important. lol! 3nerGie decided it would be worth the waste of time to deface my site to get their rant about Serbia published. The funny thing is that this blog, and really all of my domains are not popular and gets next to NO visitors anymore. lol! This is what happens when people have too much time on their hands.

This morning I was greeted with a b-day present: A nice email from my web host. It turns out they moved into one of my domains with a hate site. I’m sure it was politically driven, though I did not see the hate site myself as it was deleted by the time I woke up. Because of the content that were posted, my host is tracking down the culprits for legal reasons, and I may also take legal action myself. This kind of stuff will not be tolerated, and should not be tolerated. I’ll probably blog later on the evils of politics.

According to this article, Facebook was going to require 1,000 fans to recieve your unique user name. It was a very stiff policy that would have left most Facebook users out in the cold.

As of this morning, the 1,000 fan requirement is gone. Rejoice FB users, and delight in the gold rush for your user names!

Free Pictures | acobox.comI’ve been looking at starting a microblogging service for ham operators and a separate service for cloggers. The issue is, what software do I pick? Well, I’ve been looking around and found a few packages and haven’t found one I liked yet. I’ll give you a rundown of what packages I found, and my reservations I have against the software.

  • Laconica is a microblogging tool. It looks good and is fairly feature rich. My main reservation about this software is the license it’s released under is the AGPL (GNU AFFERO GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE) which requires you to not only make available the original source codes, but any modifications you’ve made to the software. I’m sorry, but if I want an original feature that no one else has, and I modify this program and release the modifications, it would no longer make my feature novel.
  • WordPress MU + Prologue theme. WordPress is prowerful to say the least, and the Prologue theme gives it a simple interface. It’s not a plugin so the 100 to 140 character limit isn’t inforced. The lure is the power of WordPress and the multitude of plugins available.
  • Grooner looks ok, but the installation isn’t that easy, and it’s a 1 hit wonder as it only does microblogging.
  • Elgg is another microblogging platform that seems feature rich. There are also a lot of plugins available for it. This is probably the most promising of the platforms I’ve looked at. It’s covered under the GPL and has an active community.

These are the top 4 so far. My requirements are simple. Don’t require me to release my enhancements.  In the past, I’ve made contributions to OSS projects that helped me out in one way or another. If I choose to release it, so be it, but it will be on my terms and my choice. I’m not able to pay for some of the commercial software available ( for multiple hundreds of dollars) so it must be free (as in beer).

All that being said, I’ve toyed with the idea of reviving one of my old projects into a microblogging software. We’ll see I guess….
