What happens when local Government regulates dogs?

Face it, bad legislation sucks at any level in the Government.

I found an ugent news article from the AKC today. It says that the Albuquerque City Council will vote on May 1st (and has already been voted on and passed ahead of schedule apparently) on rules that will severely limit a citizen’s rights to keep and breed dogs. They plan to instate, among other things, fees upon fees for owning and breeding “unaltered” dogs. Basically, Albuquerque’s just down the road from here, so I don’t want our City Council to be getting any ideas.

On the outside, it is a noble cause. Who likes the overcrowding of the local animal shelters? It sucks, and we all know it. But on the inside it could cause some heartache for those that do regularly breed their dogs for the right reasons.

What are the right reasons? Well, the only real reason to breed a dog is for the betterment of the breed. Obviously there are accidental breedings which is probably what this law wants to target, but it does so at the expense of legit dog fanciers living in the area. On top of this, there really isn’t even any hard evidence or true studies to backup this decision. In my opinion, it’s BS laws (Federal, state, and local) that force people to either move out of the affected areas, or not move there in the first place. I know I won’t be thinking about moving there in the future, and I’m glad I didn’t back a few years when I was practically offered a job there.

Maybe someone with a deep pocket or two might want to take this to court? Seems like a prize target for collapsing against the Constitution or Bill of Rights. That’d be funny to see, and I might even drive the 6+ hours to go and watch it. Also, it may be interesting to see what the next city election will provide. People love their dogs, and when they get pissed, and they vote, it’s a wonderful thing.

I really do wonder though…. Was City Councilor Sally Mayer attacked by a dog as a child? I can’t understand why someone would go to such lengths to punish them, and their owners, for something otherwise.

Maybe more later…
