AMD to buy ATI for $5.4 Mill…errr… Billion cash….
Can you believe that? After days of speculation, it finally comes out: AMD is buying ATI.
To me, this is a very good thing all the way around. It means that AMD will be put on a more even playing field with Intel. Why? Well, for years Intel has been making their own motherboard chipset to go along with their processers, now it’s AMD’s turn.
Let me explain. ATI creates more than just excellent video chipsets, they also create chipset for motherboards; think ATI Crossfire. This will allow for better compatability between ATI chipset motherboards and AMD processers. I think this is the real reason AMD and ATI are getting into bed together, and it makes a ton of sense.
Now, there has been speculation that AMD and ATI want to integate the GPU/CPU. I honestly don’t think this will happen. Think about it? Is it feesable? Heat factors abound, but what about the ability to upgrade? Buy a whole new combo-PU? That would be far too expensive in my honest opinion. No, as I said before, better interoperability is what they’re after. Now, if ATI video cards can take full advantage of AMD, and vice-versa with AMD processers to ATI mobo chipsets, then it could be a match made in high-tech paradise.
Maybe more later….
Edit: Made a mistake in the title. lol!
